Largan’s first half earnings rose 35%

Taiwan’s largest handset lens- maker, Largan Precision Co (大立光), yesterday reported that first-half profits totaled NT$2.29 billion (US$79 million), up 35 percent from the same period last year, as robust global shipments of smartphones boosted orders from customers.

Earnings per share in the first six months of the year reached NT$17.09, up from last year’s NT$12.65, said Largan, which counts HTC Corp (宏達電), Apple Inc and Motorola Inc among its customers.

Net sales during the period expanded 52 percent to NT$7.58 billion, compared with NT$4.99 billion in the same period last year. However, gross margin slid to 43.95 percent from 47.81 percent a year earlier.

For the current quarter, the company said that revenues would grow from NT$4.07 billion in the second quarter, but refused to provide a growth figure.

Contributions from 8-megapixel (MP) lenses, which are priced higher than lower-resolution 2MP and 3MP lenses, expanded and accounted for more than 10 percent of overall sales late in the second quarter.

Chief executive officer Adam Lin (林恩平) told an investor teleconference the company would continue to benefit from new orders that are mostly for 8MP lenses.

As for 10MP lenses, the company said there were still technical problems with the sensor solutions and mass production would likely have to wait until 2013, Lin said.

He added that production is currently running at “full” capacity, with additional capacity ramping up until the end of next year to take in more orders, Lin said.

Analysts raised concern during a teleconference that Largan’s profit margins could be affected by the entry of more low and mid-end smartphones into the market.

Lin cited its Chinese customers as an example, saying that although some were launching lower-priced smartphones, they would not compromise on picture quality by using lower-resolution lenses.

Handset lenses accounted for 96 percent of Largan’s first-half sales, while digital camera lenses and multifunctional printer lenses contributed 3 percent and 1 percent respectively, company data showed.

With many lens-makers ramping up capacity, HSBC Global Research said Largan faces intensified competition going into next year.

A China-based lens-maker started shipping 2MP lenses to Nokia Oyj in April and is in the process of being qualified as a supplier for 5MP lenses, HSBC said in a report yesterday.

A Taiwanese lens-maker has also been qualified by Apple and its production yield for 8MP lenses is close to Largan’s, it added.

Shares of Largan closed up 2.96 percent at NT$834 on the Taiwan Stock Exchange yesterday.

Getting There: In Which Our Reporter Flies to the American West, Is Captivated by the View

My ungodly departure hour has come and gone, and now I’m off, writing this as my plane cruises over Toledo, Ohio. I’m on my way to Supai, Arizona, a tiny town on the Havasupai Indian Reservation where I’ll try to find both glorious seclusion and the most comfort possible with the officefull of gear that I’ve amassed for review.

After testing out a great deal of backpacking equipment on the roof of the Forbes Building in Manhattan–first through a campout on the hottest night of the year, then with some follow-up visits to document details–I’ve piled the winning gear into a backpack, then piled the winning backpack into a suitcase (as anyone who flies to a hike will tell you, baggage handlers can be rough on straps, and without in-tact straps I can’t have a backpacking trip at all).

Most of what I’m bringing with me is now in the cargo hold of my airplane, but I’ve kept a few choice bits with me for the flight. These are essential for a good start to a trip that needs to be relaxing, fulfilling and productive.

Ultimate Ears In-Ear Headphones

Back in January, when Michael Noer sent me to Bucharest on four hours’ notice, I brought a few pairs of noise-canceling headphones with me to test head-to-head. the unexpected winners of that review were not the bulky active-noise-reduction headphones that are ubiquitous in first class; instead, a tiny pair of in-ear phones from Sennheiser won the day; they were comfortable, light, more practical to sleep in, and vastly more compact than over-the-ear headphones, and they blocked noise nearly as well.

On this trip, I’m trying out an upgrade to the typical in-ear phones: a pair of Ultimate Ears custom headphones, made by Logitech, that were fitted to my ears a few weeks ago. the primary clientele for this line of high-end earphones is rock musicians, who need to protect their hearing during concerts by blocking out loud noise at the same time that they need to hear themselves accurately.

The buying process for Ultimate Ears starts with a visit to an audiologist who takes an impression of the ear canal with a rubber mold. That’s sent off to California, where technicians build the custom earphones so that they fit snugly. the earphones arrive a couple of weeks later in a metal clamshell case that, along with colored earpieces, conceals what would otherwise look something like a pair of hearing aides.

Should i go for Kodak EasyShare C43- 12 MP Digital Camera with Smart Capture Feature?

Should i go for Kodak EasyShare C43 12 MP Digital Camera with Smart Capture Feature?

I am planning to buy a 12 MP digital camera under Rs.4000 n found this kodak C43. Can anyone please suggest me whether it is a wise option to go for it or some other brand too offers my needs?

I have several kodak cameras and am happy with all of them , given the holidays there's lots of sales going on and received an email from the kodak store for the black friday sale , the c43 is priced at $79 , reg price , from friday 11/26 – 11/28 for $20 more you could get the Z915 reg price $199 , sale price $99 , suggest that what ever you buy shop and you can get a good price

ya its economical n gud product m using it…i think its available at rs 3999 rt now…

Based of 18-months of write ups here I'd say don't. So many horror stories about bad, junkie, poorly made and broken Kodak cameras – I wouldn't. Stay with the proven leaders Canon and Nikon.

If you don't mind spending your money on junk, go for it. I wouldn't have another Kodak if they were free.

Pawnshops, and shows, grow in popularity

Pawnshops, and shows, grow in popularityBy Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY Updated

SAN FRANCISCO — Just a few blocks from where sunny tourists ride cable cars past colorful shops, life turns gray.

Chris Nosworthy needs money for groceries as he awaits his next paycheck from a lighting store. He has no bank account, no credit cards. no options, but for one.

“Hey, Chris, pawning the laptop again?” says John Beauchamp, 49, manager of Pacific Loan Co., a pawnshop that has called this gritty Sixth and Mission location home for half a century.

Nosworthy, 40, nods. in a matter of minutes, Beauchamp has logged details about the used computer (value: $350), gotten the requisite signatures and fingerprints for the local police, and sent its owner off with a cash loan, $80, that if paid back in four months — plus $18 in interest — recoups the laptop.

  • PHOTOS: Pawnshops reflect real life

“I’ll come back for it, I always do,” says Nosworthy, surrounded by the shop’s staggering array of bric-a-brac, from bongos to bling. “Look, you don’t walk into these places because you planned your life well. but they’re here when there’s a crisis, and I’m glad for that.”

Beauchamp has worked here since he was 14 and wouldn’t consider a different job. “What people bring in can be interesting, but mostly it’s just knowing that for many people, we are the last resort,” he says. “Pawnshops are often thought of as this seedy monster in the basement. but that’s changing fast.”

Long before the post-World War II boom in consumer banking and credit, pawnshops established a legitimate role in the way Americans made it from paycheck to paycheck. but over time, pawn’s image was tarnished, in part because of movies such as Rod Steiger’s The Pawnbroker in 1964.

Pawnshops may be crammed with stuff

I have a digital SLR camera and a regular 6 megapixel point and shoot, and I would like to take infrared pics.

I have a digital SLR camera and a regular 6 megapixel point and shoot, and I would like to take infrared pics.

How do I go about doing this with digital cameras? I have a regular film camera (Pentax k1000), But I would really like to avoid the hassle of processing infrared film. I also would rather not send out my SLR camera and have it altered to an infrared camera because it is the only one I use. Is there any (gasp) photo editing software that can change your photos to infrared?

Infrared is light outside of the visible spectrum. The sensors in digital cameras are made for visible light. you cannot use a filter or software to give you something that is not there. Infrared film is sensitive to IR light.
